I honestly did not believe an overweight guy who did not run at all could complete a 26.2 mile race but I figured I would give it a shot. I could not run one mile without walking when I started but I was determined to make a change. Along the way my wife introduced me to the story of Andrew and his fight with cancer.
(www.aboutthewin.wordpress.com). Andrew’s mom and my wife had been friends for some time but the fight against cancer brought all of us together. I kept running, and running. First it was three miles without walking, then 10, 15 and last month I ran 18 miles. And now, one week away from the PF Chang’s Rock n Roll Arizona Marathon, I am ready. Along the way I have raised over two thousand dollars to help fight cancer and I am very close to reaching my final goal. (Donate here http://pages.teamintraining.org/wa/pfchangs11/chatfiec5b)
As I spent time running, it occurred to me that training for this marathon, emphasized many traits one needs in the security industry. Discipline, courage, dedication and perseverance in training are integral to building a successful career in security. In losing 50 pounds I have re-discovered these traits within along with a new confidence in myself. My uniformed security officers now look up to their “in shape” boss. My quality of work has increased and I feel that I have earned the respect of my client. I have also set a standard for those in my charge – set your mind to something and you can accomplish it. Eating better and getting in shape do not just offer a healthier way to live, they offer a clearer mind for keeping alert, a better ability to respond physically and, let’s face it, how much confidence does an overweight officer instill in someone who feels they might need help?
With my new-found self-confidence, I have applied for jobs that I would not have dreamed of six months ago. I thank Team in Training for changing the life cancer patients and for changing my life, too.
