ASIS Puget Sound Members,

I am pleased and humbled to announce my appointment as ASIS International’s Regional Vice President (RVP) for Region 1-A. Jeff Slotnick CPP, PSP the 2011 RVP, has accepted an appointment as the Chairman of the Physical Security Council at ASIS International, though he will still be active in local and regional leadership.

Thank you for your support these last 5 years of ASIS Chapter leadership. It has been a great pleasure to have served the membership of ASIS Puget Sound and the greater Seattle security community. It is through the support of members like you that we are able to continue to strengthen our programs, and to develop new and innovative projects to serve our members and the security community at large.

As we approach 2012, I look forward to serving the oncoming Puget Sound Board. The ASIS Puget Sound Chapter will continue to be a leader in providing quality educational resources, monthly programs and strong specialized security committee involvement. Download the PDF>>

“Tech” advice from one of our own.

Maybe being an investigator makes me paranoid. Possibly doing forensic work with computers that have a trail of embezzlement, murder, etc. affects my worldview. Working with defense attorneys and prosecutors isn’t exactly mood stabilizing.

Something really different happened last week though. I was in Baltimore at an ISSA international conference of folks who do computer security. It’s a typical big meeting filled with strangers running between parallel sessions. On the last day someone called my name, it was Frank Simorjay, a guy who is respected in the world of computer security. He talked to me about a new report that he has produced for Windows users. My summary of the results:

1) A simple fix can prevent 43% of malware propagation threats, more on this next week.

2) User training can prevent another 45%… remember not to click on the link in that suspicious email 3. Keeping Windows updated takes out another 6% 4. Having effective passwords prevents another 6% 5. Less than 1% depends on exotic attacks
